About This Shot

I was walking along the beach enjoying the day and looking for an interesting photo, but as you can see, there wasn’t much going on.

It reminded me of Chinese folding panels, where most of the artwork is blank and only a small mountain appears in a corner. Chinese art is about space, not things. I realized that was exactly what I was looking at — the space had become the subject.

Not only was the sky all about space, but the calm water and endless sand were about space too. The meeting point was rather vague, so that became space as well. There were no objects, no focal points — everything here is space.

The Chinese knew that life is more about what isn’t there than the clutter that distracts us from seeing the truth. Sea, sky, and sand meet so gently that the horizon almost disappears. Free from distractions, this photograph invites the eye to wander through open space, where light, color, and simplicity become the true subject.
