This was a spring day on Elwood Beach in Australia. There wasn’t a breath of wind, and no one was in sight. I had my camera with me and was looking for something amazing to photograph – but there was nothing around, just sky, water, and sand. Then it occurred to me: this nothingness was something. It reminded me of some of my past philosophical studies, where the insight into a spiritual being is that it is nothing – there is nothing to a spiritual being, it is just consciousness. Zen Buddhism talks about this a lot. So I lifted up my camera and started taking pictures of nothing. I don’t know if anyone was watching, but they must have wondered what I was photographing. Have a look at the picture – what do you see? Do you see nothing, or do you see sand, water, and sky? If you can see nothing, you’ll know what I mean. If you see something, you probably think I’m a bit nuts – but don’t worry, you are not the first person to come to that conclusion.
