This storm clouds photography print captures a dramatic sky over Melbourne, Australia – taken in June, which down under is actually the middle of winter, not summer. I shot it from a hill overlooking Elwood Beach, looking north toward the city. If you look closely at the bottom of the frame, you’ll spot the Melbourne skyline – dwarfed almost to nothing beneath the size of the clouds above it.
Seeing it in person was humbling. Storm clouds like this make a city built by decades of human effort look small and temporary by comparison. It raises a fair question: who deserves more awe, nature or the things we build? Or maybe the real question, in more of a Zen sense, is whether that’s even the right way to separate the two.
