A New Beginning
Some photographs happen because of planning. Others happen because of patience.
This image was taken on New Year’s Eve along the Florida coast. The sunset had been promising all afternoon, but as every photographer knows, there are no guarantees. Sometimes the sky turns gray just when the light should be at its best. On this evening, however, nature decided to put on a spectacular show.
Over the course of the sunset I took approximately thirty photographs. Each image captured a slightly different arrangement of clouds, color, and light. The challenge was not finding a photograph—it was choosing the one that best expressed the feeling of the moment.
What drew me to this scene was the dramatic pattern of clouds stretching across the sky. As the sun approached the horizon, the clouds became illuminated from below, creating a remarkable display of orange, pink, and violet tones. The water reflected the warm colors while the darker foreground provided contrast and depth.
When I later reviewed the photographs, one image stood out from the rest. It seemed to capture both the energy and the tranquility of the evening. The setting sun marked the end of one year, while the glowing horizon suggested the beginning of another.
My wife, Erica, looked at the image and immediately suggested the title, A New Beginning. The title felt right. New Year’s Eve is naturally a time of reflection, but it is also a time of optimism. Every ending contains the possibility of a fresh start.
Photography often reminds us that beautiful moments are temporary. The colors that filled the sky lasted only a few minutes before fading into twilight. Yet through photography we can preserve those fleeting moments and revisit them again and again.
For me, this image is about hope, renewal, and the quiet promise that tomorrow offers another chance to begin.
