The Invitation

Some photographs are carefully planned. Others simply call your name. Standing at this stretch of beach, I had the unmistakable feeling that the ocean was inviting me in for a swim. It was a hot day, the water was cool, and the invitation was tempting — but instead of accepting, I took this picture and kept walking. I think that was a mistake. Every time I look at this image, I want to jump in. It’s not polite to decline a kind invitation, so consider this my apology to whoever extended it that day. Next time, I’m saying yes. Crystal-clear water rolls gently onto the sandy shoreline beneath a brilliant blue sky, rich turquoise and emerald inviting you to pause, breathe, and imagine stepping in.
