As a student of music, you learn about harmony early on. It’s easy – you hear an instrument or a singer out of tune and you know it instantly. Color harmony isn’t like that. It took me a long time in art school to really get it, but I eventually figured out that color harmony might be the most important thing in painting or photography. It’s quiet, but it’s doing all the work – it can make or break the whole piece. When I found this little flower tucked in among the other plants, its colors were so subtle and so in tune with each other that I wanted to paint it. Then I looked closer and thought, honestly, I’m not sure I could pull that off with paint. So I just pulled out my camera and shot it. That will teach it not to make me feel totally inadequate as an artist.
I don’t think the flower paid much attention to me though.
