There’s a version of Melbourne skyline wall art you only get on a clear Sunday morning with nowhere to be. I took my wife for a walk south of Elwood Beach toward Brighton, and there it was – the whole Melbourne cityscape sitting on the horizon across the bay, with a small wooden pier running out into the water in the foreground.

What caught my eye was how the pier echoed the skyline – both of them these thin, deliberate lines built by people, one right in front of the other. I couldn’t have told you at the time why that combination worked. I still can’t, honestly. I studied art for years and nobody ever gave me a formula for beauty. It’s not a math problem with a correct answer. It’s closer to trying to define love – you know it when you feel it, and explaining it kind of ruins it.

There were a lot of decisions I could have made differently. Smaller sky, bigger ocean. Zoomed in tighter on the pier. Zoomed out for more cityscape. A few hundred small choices that all somehow add up to this one feeling of contentment – sun out, water calm, city minding its own business in the distance.

How does a photo of a cityscape and a boat dock produce that much emotional response? I don’t know. But I’m glad it does.
