This ocean sunset photography print started out as a pretty unpromising evening. It was shot at Elwood Beach, just south of Melbourne – no boats, no clouds, barely a person in sight, and every sign of a dull evening ahead. But as the sun dropped, the sky lit up and the water turned to reflected light. In the last few minutes, a boat drifted onto the horizon and someone walked straight into the glare, forming a perfect silhouette – both arriving right as the light was at its best.
I framed the shot in thirds with the sun sitting right on the horizon, letting the reflected light and the dark silhouette of the land create a strong contrast. The timing wasn’t planned – the boat and the figure just happened to show up in that narrow window before the light faded completely.
This one was taken not long before I left Australia to move back to the US, and there’s something fitting about a sunset image marking the end of one chapter and the start of another.
