Makes Me Wonder
When I was in high school, a friend asked me a question that stayed with me for the rest of my life.
He looked around, turned his palms upward, and said:
“Do you ever wonder what’s really going on here?”
At first the question seemed simple, but the more I thought about it, the deeper it became.
Where did all of this come from?
Why are we here?
Where are we going?
Most people seemed content not to ask. But for me, the questions never went away.
Years later I discovered a painting by Paul Gauguin titled Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? It was comforting to know that someone else had been asking the same questions.
This photograph reminds me of that lifelong search.
The ocean has always seemed like a symbol of mystery to me. We can stand on the shore and look across the water, but we can never quite see what lies beyond the horizon.
The same may be true of life itself.
Perhaps the answers are out there somewhere.
Or perhaps the search is the answer.
Either way, this view still makes me wonder.
